International Escapes: Not As Far As You May Think

It’s not hard to presume an international getaway is too ambitious for a weekend. pexels-photo-2063892.jpg This couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, there many countries close enough to go for a long weekend.

Following is a list of destinations ideal for an unforgettable long weekend.

Montreal, Quebec
Old-world elegance is front and center in this second biggest Canadian city after Toronto.

In the Vieux Montreal area, tourists can stroll cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and eateries. Outdoor lovers will have a lot to do in the lovely Mount Royal Park, from vigorous hikes to leisurely bike rides or restful picnics. The park also offers snowshoeing, ice skating and a lot more every winter season.

If you are a beach and sun person, Bermuda is optimal, with its pink sand beaches, lovely weather, and ideal location just a short two-hour flight from many airports on the east coast. You don’t have to like beaches to adore Bermuda; history aficionados will be fascinated by the old military forts complete with cannon installations, classic colonial buildings, and enchanting cobblestone streets.

If you want a little heart-pounding excitement, rent a jet ski and head over to the famous Bermuda Triangle.

Baja California Sur, Mexico
The beautiful beaches of Baja California Sur, Mexico are an enjoyable weekend trip for surfers and anyone who just wants to lie in the sun and the sand. At the southern tip of Baja California is Cabo San Lucas, known for its exotic resorts, world-class dining, and cool bars and nightclubs.

Adventurers and water sports devotees will also enjoy Lover’s Beach for its lovely blue waters, fascinating caves to explore, and stunning rock formations.

Costa Rica

Enticing Costa Rica is a hop, skip, and a jump away from many U.S. cities and can make a wonderful weekend getaway. It boasts an impressive 800 miles of breathtaking coastal areas complete with amazingly beautiful beaches. Adventure seekers will find no end to their exciting choices: hikes through the exotic jungle; zip-lining in the lush rain forest; rappelling down a thundering waterfall; seeing exotic birds, monkeys, and sloths in their natural habitat; and relaxing in volcano-fed hot springs.

Cartagena, Columbia

Located on the northern coastline of Columbia facing the Caribbean, in Cartagena you’ll find dazzling blue waters with coral reefs that edge white powdery beaches.

History aficionados will enjoy the architecture reminiscent of Spanish colonial times with its military influence, ancient walls still surrounding part of the city today, and fortresses made from coral stone more than 500 years ago.

Toronto is as cosmopolitan a city as they come. More than 50% of its residents were not born there, making it a very diverse city in terms of people and ethnic heritage. Seeing its numerous ethnic neighborhoods is like taking a fast world tour, with Koreatown, Greektown, Chinatown, and Little Italy all within the boundaries of the city.

Whether you are looking for extreme adventure, unwinding on the beach with a cool drink, or something in between, there is an international weekend getaway right for you. Whatever you want – love, adventure, culinary delights, history – can be yours.

So How do River Cruises Differ from Ocean Cruises?

Though river cruises and ocean cruises are comparable in many ways, you will discover some vital differences as well. In general, ocean liners are massive in size and have additional comforts in each cabin. Therefore, they are able to hold many more people aboard. Since river ships hold fewer travelers, passengers tend to get to know each other better and oftentimes create lifelong friendships.

Another important distinction is that river cruises normally do not ever sail a full day, as opposed to ocean cruises which might be at sea for several days at a time. Travelers normally get to visit a new destination every day. Since the landscape outside the cruiser is always changing, the feeling of adventure becomes part of the discovery. First-time passengers might want to start with a river cruise for several reasons including the fact that land is always in sight, the water is shallower, and the sailing is smoother, so there is practically no chance of getting seasick.

Of course, with their more substantial size, ocean cruises normally come with additional things like onboard gyms, live performances, and many more possibilities for where and what to eat. But most river cruises offer inclusive value, which means your Wi-Fi, water, alcoholic drinks and included excursions are covered in the cost.
